Non-Governmental Organization Picaflor de Arica

(Chilean Woodstar)

Our NPO Picaflor de Arica (Chilean Woodstar) was created in 2016 with the mission of conserving the Chilean Woodstar (Eulidia yarrellii), maintaining the wildlife population and to avoid their extinction. The NPO works in the local communities, focusing on a strong social role. Our program has diverse courses of action, some of which are:

To obtain priority lands for the Chilean Woodstar (Eulidia yarrelli) also known as wildlife reserves. To educate local communities, making them aware of the critical status of the Chilean Woodstar. This is so they can get involved in the conservation of the Chilean Woodstar. To collect scientific evidence in situ, inter alia.

For the conservation of the Chilean Woodstar, we want draw up a plan of action for the species, which includes: to establish nurseries which would restore native vegetation therefore improving the quality of its habitat, to create protected areas in order to conserve the Chilean Woodstar’s habitat and to encourage the community to help and to actively take part in the conservation.

The NPO Picaflor de Arica is the only local organization in the region that works actively for the conservation of the Chilean Woodstar with concrete actions
